Porsche started an engineering consulting group, eventually known as Porsche AG, after having to leave Mercedes. He did not get along with their engineering guidelines, so he was dismissed. He found a select group that would work for him, and his primary interest was sports and racing cars. Their abilities were in high demand, with the luxury sedan from Austria, the Steyr, being one of their projects. It never managed to get beyond the prototype stage. Their services were also used by Audi, then known as Auto Union, who were the first car maker to develop front-wheel drive economy cars.

Their company developed the supercharged V-12 and V-16 engines for those mid-engine Grand Prix cars. For pretty much a decade, they dominated European auto racing, together with Mercedes-Benz racer. Sometime there after, NSU and Zundapp each used their best-known designs. A couple of well-known Porsche protoypes were the torsion-bar suspension, trademarked by them, and the rear-mounted engine. Neither company manufactured the designs fast enough for Porsche, so he made a sale of the concept to the German government. His design ended up being manufactured in a plant at Wolfsburg, that he oversaw the construction of. As part of his sketches he called it the Type 60, but it became what we all know as the Volkswagen Beetle.
