What Most Websites Will Not Tell You About - A Short Background Of The Porsche Automobile
You've most likely heard of the Porsche automobile, and perhaps you have even ridden in one or possibly own one. However you may not know exactly where the Porsche actually came from. Precisely the moment the Porsche automobile story started is a little unclear. Around 1950, the Porsche 356 was introduced to the United States by Max Hoffman, but 1948 was the year that the first automobile was released that had the name Porsche. But the real beginning of the Porsche history was probably in 1875, when, in a Bohemian village called Haffersrdorp, a son was born to the local tinsmith.

That boy was called Ferdinand Porsche, who firstly grew to be known as a man of technical genius but who was regarded as lacking the discipline required for engineering. He had part-time instruction as an engineering student in Vienna, for his only formal education, but at the age of 25, he became an automobile designer. As an engineer he seemed to be brilliant, but he was also temperamental and over time moved from one leading German car manufactur to another. Porsche was responsible for the style of a dozen of those cars that made breathtaking technical history. He served to produce the SSK line of Mercedes-Benz cars, one of the most revered of all time, when he worked for them.
Porsche started an engineering consulting group, eventually known as Porsche AG, after having to leave Mercedes. He did not get along with their engineering guidelines, so he was dismissed. He found a select group that would work for him, and his primary interest was sports and racing cars. Their abilities were in high demand, with the luxury sedan from Austria, the Steyr, being one of their projects. It never managed to get beyond the prototype stage. Their services were also used by Audi, then known as Auto Union, who were the first car maker to develop front-wheel drive economy cars.
Their company developed the supercharged V-12 and V-16 engines for those mid-engine Grand Prix cars. For pretty much a decade, they dominated European auto racing, together with Mercedes-Benz racer. Sometime there after, NSU and Zundapp each used their best-known designs. A couple of well-known Porsche protoypes were the torsion-bar suspension, trademarked by them, and the rear-mounted engine. Neither company manufactured the designs fast enough for Porsche, so he made a sale of the concept to the German government. His design ended up being manufactured in a plant at Wolfsburg, that he oversaw the construction of. As part of his sketches he called it the Type 60, but it became what we all know as the Volkswagen Beetle.
